PREFACE
The school of Physical Anthropology of the University of Barcelona was one of the first to develop in Spanish university life. Telesforo de Aranzadi(1860-1945) was the first Professor of Anthropology of the University of Barcelona. His scientific works were of great interest because of their anthropometric orientation and scientific methodology. Together with several prehistorians and archaeologists (Bosch Gimpera, Corominas, Batista y Roca, and Serra Vilaró), he founded the “Associació Catalana d’Antropologia, Etnologia i Prehistòria". With Hoyos Sainz he published in 1912 “Unidades y constantes de la Crania Hispanica”, a synthetic work of Spanish somatology.
Aranzadi’s successor in the Barcelona chair was Santiago Alcobé (1903-1977). He took part in scientific expeditions to the former Spanish colonies in Africa and to the high valleys of the Pyrenees. He ran the Institute for Anthropological and Genetic Research of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (Concejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC). He researched widely into human variability with a clearly genetic perspective and stressed statistic analysis.
Among the disciples of Dr Alcobé in the chair of Anthropology of the University of Barcelona the following can be singled out: Antonio Prevosti, José Pons, Miguel Fusté, Luís Sitges, Pascual Moreno, and Amparo Font. After the founding in 1977 of the Spanish Society of Biological Anthropology (Sociedad Española de Antropología Biológica, SEAB), initially as a section of the Royal Spanish Natural History Society and as from 1979 as an independent society, José Pons became its first president. Since then anthropological activity in Spain has been continuous and university study plans for anthropology were established. The latter were heavily influenced by the work carried out by José Pons, who was the master of many of the anthropologists currently active. He occupied the chairs of Anthropology of Oviedo (1962-1968), Madrid (1968-1973), and finally Barcelona (1973-1986), where he succeeded Alcobé. He is currently a retired Professor Emeritus of the Department of Animal Biology of the University of Barcelona, honorary president of the Spanish Society of Physical Anthropology (Sociedad Española de Antropología Física, SEAF), and an academician of the Barcelona Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The physical anthropologists of Barcelona have been involved in continuous teaching and research. In 1985 they organised the IV Congress of the SEAB, and twenty-six years later it is their pleasure to host the XVII congress, as they were almost bound to do because of their career path mentioned above. They have prepared a varied field of thematic areas and the most appropriate headquarters: the Faculty of Biology of the University of Barcelona.

BARCELONA
Barcelona, the capital of Cataluña, is a modern port and the birthplace of modernist architecture. With an antiquity of two thousand years, it is a dynamic, modern, and welcoming city open to all European currents.
Barcelona has a most interesting old part which is known as the Barrio Gótico because of the various medieval buildings to be found there. We recommend taking a stroll along these streets and through these squares, visiting the headquarters of official institutions such as the Casa de la Ciudad, the County Council building, Museums, etc., even if you have only one day. The Barrio Gótico includes alleys with Gothic churches and mansions, evocative patios such as that of the Casa del Arcediano, grand architectural complexes such as the Plaza del Rey with the former Palacio Real (Royal Palace), the viewpoint of King Martín, and the Chapel of Santa Águeda, which was built on the impressive Roman walls.
A walk along the famous Ramblas of Barcelona is a must. A pleasant hotchpotch of stalls of flowers, birds, and books fills this charming avenue that links the Plaza de Cataluña to the port. The Ramblas also offers street shows such as the living statues, together with a number of notable buildings; markets; newspaper kiosks, cafeterias; and restaurants.
The Sagrada Familiais one of the most impressive creations of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. This huge basilica in Neogothic style, the construction of which was initiated in 1882, is the most visited tourist attraction in the city. Other attractions include the outstanding houses La Pedrera(Casa Milà) and the highly coloured Batlló in which the bricks are curved, and the Parque Güell, which was laid out between 1900 and 1914 and is another of the dazzling architectural creations of Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona.
Yet another attraction of our city is that of the avant-garde art of the Picasso Museum, MACBA (Contemporani Art), the Miró Foundation, and the Tàpies Foundation.
